Michelle Sun 400 1
Close up of 2D COVID piece 1

From March 1 through March 29, the Connie A. Eastburn Gallery featured artist Dr. Michelle Choy Sun. Dr. Sun earned her Bachelor of Arts from University of Hong Kong. She then earned her Master of Education, Master of Arts, and her Doctor of Education from Columbia University. She has a myriad of accomplishments, including taking part in the Fukuoka International Seminar, the Freeman Foundation Scholarship, as well as being a participant of the Masterpieces Project at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from 2013–2014.Ěý

Her main exhibition, Covid Chronicle: Cells, Chips, and Light features stunning two-dimensional and three- dimensional works of art that examined the implications of the Covid crisis. The impacts of such an event are still being discovered and discussed today, and Dr. Sun’s art hopes to explore those discussions. Inspiration for her artwork comes from experiences and themes that ask, “What is our deepest reflection going through isolation, depression and suffering, sacrifice, resilience and hope? Incidentally, these are the four sub-themes of Covid Chronicle.” As her audience investigates each piece, Dr. Sun hopes to set in motion thoughtful and biblical reflections, asking the individual to respond to the question: “As this virus is likely to become part of our life, what buoyant intellectual and spiritual strengths can we build to prepare for future pandemics?” While the pandemic may be over, serious consideration to Dr. Sun’s questions about it help her audience think deeply and critically, informing us on how to respond to the next crisis.

Covid Chronicle: Cells, Chips, and Light and several of Dr. Sun’s other art exhibits will be on display until March 29, 2024.

Meet Our Faculty

Charlotte Gleason web 1000

Charlotte Gleason

Chair, Humanities department

After graduating from 91łÔąĎ in 2000, Charlotte taught high school English in public schools both in Pennsylvania and New York. Her high school students inspired her to reconsider the place of adolescent literature in the classroom, and in 2006 she completed her thesis on how to integrate both the classics and YA literature in the classroom.

The birth of her first son led her to pursue higher education, and in 2007 she accepted a position as a part-time faculty member at 91łÔąĎ. During the last two decades, Charlotte has taught in a variety of classrooms and developed curriculum for private Christian schools and home school families, including her own. Recently, Charlotte transitioned to a full-time role at Cairn. She teaches a variety of literature, composition, and education courses and serves as the Chair of the Humanities Department in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Tori Aquilone web 1000

Victoria Bradley Aquilone

Assistant Professor, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Victoria (Tori) Aquilone has always loved learning. She started attending Cairn for her undergraduate degrees in social studies education and Bible while she was a senior in high school. Her studies took her to graduate school where she has spent two degrees—a master’s degree in liberal studies from Villanova University and the better part of a PhD in English from the University of Delaware—studying human relationships with the natural environment in the context of contemporary American literature.

At the forefront of Tori’s academic work is the God of the Bible, whose general revelation of Himself in creation, namely His “invisible attributes” of “eternal power and divine nature” (Romans 1:20), drives her desire to learn about and care for that very creation, as well as study literary works that celebrate it. Even with such rich scholarly studies, Tori’s heart is in the classroom and thoroughly enjoys teaching English Composition, Literature and Arts in Historical Context I & II, and other literature courses.

Pre-Med Major Becomes First Cairn Graduate to Pursue a PhD in Chemistry at University of Pittsburgh /pre-med-major-becomes-first-cairn-graduate-to-pursue-a-phd-in-chemistry-at-university-of-pittsburgh/ Tue, 25 Apr 2023 19:19:45 +0000 /?p=70830 Yisheng (Ethan) Sun, a senior pre-med student graduating this spring, has been accepted into University of Pittsburgh’s PhD program in chemistry. In addition to enrolling in this program, Yisheng has accepted a teaching fellowship position, where he will supervise and instruct undergrad labs for several courses, including organic chemistry. Not only is Yisheng the first Cairn student to be accepted into a PhD chemistry program, he is also the first graduate with a minor in chemistry.Ěý

While Yisheng’s main area of interest was pre-med, his love for chemistry blossomed as he studied under his numerous science professors. His interest in organic chemistry and biochemistry has given him the ultimate desire to pursue doctoral-level research in chemistry instead of biology, with a goal to “synthesize novel molecules or therapeutic agents that inhibit genetic disease or cure injury at a molecular level, construct polymers for new materials to mitigate certain environmental issues, or design new mechanisms that improve synthetic efficiency.”

Yisheng cites the support of his professors as role models and well-suited instructors for bringing him to this major milestone: “Throughout my four years at Cairn, I gained numerous insights from how my professors approached biology and chemistry with a biblical worldview. Dr. Bell showed me the strongest supportive evidence for the design argument; Dr. Eshelman introduced his theology of the human body; Professor Jensen refreshed my understanding of what science is and its relationship with Christian discipleship; and Dr. Khushman shared various biblical references in relevance to medicine. All these meaningful discussions prepared me to walk a different path in the field of science.”

Artist Laura Sallade Featured in the Connie A. Eastburn GalleryĚý /artist-laura-sallade-featured-in-the-connie-a-eastburn-gallery/ Wed, 01 Feb 2023 19:00:00 +0000 /?p=68211

This semester’s Connie A. Eastburn Gallery features the art series Invisible Thread by Laura Sallade. ł§˛ą±ô±ô˛ą»ĺ±đ’s work relies on several unique mediums including glass, silver, and resin. As the mediums are used, Sallade interacts with them to reveal layers, marks, and remains. Through this process, Sallade hopes to communicate “a mysterious and paradoxical understanding of the world, highlighting our transient and skewed perception of light through observation and materiality.”Ěý

These effects, however, are not strictly planned. Sallade opts to ignore micromanaging the creative process: “Instead of planning every step of the process and resigning to a predetermined outcome, I allow the process to surprise me.” Sallade draws inspiration from artists such as John Cage, Pat Steir, Jose Parla, and Sam Gilliam while also relying on conveying personal emotional memories and capturing fleeting moments from her subconscious to carry this conversation through her artwork.

ł§˛ą±ô±ô˛ą»ĺ±đ’s Invisible Thread series offers a unique approach to creating and defining art. While her works can be hung as paintings, they are also sculptural in their essence, balancing image and object. The outcomes featured in the gallery include “Caustic Capsule III,” “Dark Water 01,” “Urban Chaos 01,” and several others. Ultimately, her goal with them is to create pieces that offer a space to think critically, pay attention, and reflect.
Invisible Thread will be on display through March 3. For more information on Sallade and her work, visit cairn.edu/arts.

91łÔąĎ to Offer Digital Media and Communication Program in Fall 2023 /cairn-university-to-offer-digital-media-and-communication-program-in-fall-2023/ Fri, 16 Dec 2022 16:05:58 +0000 /?p=63506
Professor Matt Stemler offering feedback on a digital design project.

With the ever-increasing need for individuals adept at communicating effectively in digital spaces, understanding the importance of effective writing and visual design is crucial. In light of this need, Cairn is excited to introduce a Digital Media and Communication (BA) program.

Over the past several years, Cairn has seen the growth of the visual arts department and the job opportunities our English (BA) students receive after graduating. The Digital Media and Communication program is intended to merge the main features of these two disciplines, creating a career-oriented program.

Through the incorporation of new courses including Writing for Social Media and the Web, Digital Storytelling, Communication and Culture, and many others, students will graduate with the skills and knowledge needed to prepare them for a wide range of careers and opportunities that are available in digital spaces. Throughout these courses, students will complete certifications in and through industry-standard tools such as or

As part of their curriculum, students also have the opportunity to complete internships with both Christian and secular organizations in the nonprofit and for-profit sectors, giving them hands-on learning opportunities and experience for their resumes. And with projecting an increase in demand for this work resulting in about 68,000 new jobs, Cairn graduates will be entering a career field that is ready to hire.

The Digital Media and Communication program will also offer students a choice of content emphasis within the program. Students can choose to fine-tune their interests by taking courses for Mass Media and Communication, Visual Design and Communication, Sports Media and Communication, or Marketing and Communication. All of these educational offerings and professional opportunities are offered in tandem with the University’s distinct biblical integration, ensuring that these students will not only be prepared for the workforce but will be able to view their career in light of Christ and His Word and work with excellence and integrity.

“Our qualified and talented faculty have spent a long time pouring their passion into the development for this program, said Dr. Aneesh Khushman, dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. “The Digital Media and Communication major is an opportunity for Christians to train themselves and involve themselves in a field where representation is suboptimal. The time is right for Digital Media and Communication at Cairn.”

The University is actively recruiting students for the Fall 2023 class of this new program. To learn more, visit cairn.edu/programs/digital-media. Students can also apply directly at cairn.edu/apply.

Politics Major Josiah Hasbrouck Receives National Scholarship /politics-major-josiah-hasbrouck-receives-national-scholarship/ Thu, 17 Nov 2022 15:01:51 +0000 /?p=62514

Senior Josiah Hasbrouck is one of only four undergraduate students in the nation to earn the 2022–2023 Initiative on Faith & Public Life Young Scholar Award. The award is a $5,000 scholarship from the Young Scholar Awards Program of the American Enterprise Institute’s Initiative on Faith and Public Life. The program seeks to award scholarships to students who “demonstrate significant promise in their field of research,” specifically “issues of economics, public policy, and society from a perspective of Christian faith, theology, and ethics.”

This program supports select students who conduct a year-long academic research project with a university advisor. Josiah, who is a student in the University’s Honors Program, has been working on his honors thesis under the guidance of Greg Schaller, assistant professor at 91łÔąĎ and president of the John Jay Institute. His thesis explores the intersection of Christianity and politics and was well-suited for the scholarship parameters. More specifically, his topic is “The Applicability of Protestant Natural Law Theory in American Positive Law.” Josiah describes his research as such:

“Despite skepticism in the last century, Protestant thinkers throughout history have believed in natural law and considered it legitimate grounds for human law, as did the American Founders. My work is aimed at an audience of Protestants with questions about the relationship between moral law revealed in Scripture and nature, the relationship between moral and human law, and how these relationships are relevant in the United States, given the thought of the Founders. I am also writing on natural law to promote love of God and neighbor. Following God’s law is a key way we love him, and seeking the good of society through government is a key way we love our neighbors.”

Josiah will complete his thesis by the end of the academic year, when he will graduate from the politics program with minors in Bible and philosophy. Following graduation, Josiah will travel to Washington, D.C., to present and defend his paper. The final paper, as well as an op-ed summarizing the paper, will be published by American Enterprise Institute.

Dr. Jean Minto Passes Away at Age 66 /dr-jean-minto-passes-away-at-age-66/ Wed, 07 Oct 2020 19:05:39 +0000 /?p=41175 Dr. Jean Minto, professor at the University for nearly 30 years, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on October 4, 2020.
Dr. Minto was born on July 25, 1954, in Middletown, NY. It was said that from an early age, she could most often be found with her nose in a book. To continue her love of literature, she received a degree in Bible and secondary English education from 91łÔąĎ, an MA from Arcadia University, and a Doctor of Letters from Drew University, where she received the Robert Chapman Prize for her dissertation on Irish history and culture.Ěý
Dr. Minto served in various capacities at the University since she first began teaching in 1991, but she often mentioned that she felt most at home whenever she was in the classroom. Since she taught courses in both literature and the liberal arts, most students who attended the University in her nearly 30-year long career at Cairn took courses with her. Alumni and current students spanning those three decades commonly shared how integral Dr. Minto was to both their success and enjoyment of their Cairn education.Ěý
In her most recent position as chair of the English department, Dr. Minto invested heavily in the development of her students, perhaps exemplified best by her role as advisor of English majors’ senior projects. There, she acted as a guide, motivator, and encourager to students as they finished their education and prepared for what came next after graduation. In her years as chair, she created a community among the English majors and other literature enthusiasts—a bond that was often formed over tea and scones. From encouraging conversations and advice to book swaps and reading recommendations, Dr. Minto’s legacy at the University cannot be underestimated.Ěý
“Jean was a dear friend, trusted colleague, and exemplary teacher,” said President Todd J. Williams. “She taught many of us who serve at the University presently. Her impact on Cairn was profound. Her love for the Lord and for the students was demonstrated in the way she practiced her craft as a teacher and in the interest she showed in us both in and out of the classroom. She will be greatly missed.”
Family and friends are invited to Dr. Minto’s viewings on Thursday, October 8 from 6–8 pm and again on Friday, October 9 from 11:30 am–12:30 pm at . Her memorial service will also be held on Friday at Grace Point at 12:30 pm. The church is limited to 125 attendees (masks required), so individuals are encouraged to watch the live stream of her memorial service on .Ěý
