School of Music Archives - 91łÔąĎ Walk a different path. Fri, 10 Apr 2026 19:38:24 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.4 Why Earn a Worship and Music Master’s at 91łÔąĎ? /why-earn-a-worship-and-music-masters-at-cairn-university/ Tue, 01 Apr 2025 12:48:33 +0000 /?p=95247

Maybe from a young age you’ve loved music. You also may have felt a calling to pursue leadership of some form. If you haven’t already, maybe it’s time to consider becoming a worship leader! And if that’s the case, you might need a worship and music master’s!Ěý

Additionally, an effective and knowledgeable worship leader requires a little more than an appreciation for music (though that’s a great start!). A good worship leader must have a strong grasp of the technical aspects of their work, a deep foundation of faith, and the ability to lead others effectively.ĚýAt Cairn, we prepare you as such. Check out our top five favorite reasons to earn your Worship and Music Master’s at Cairn:

1. Our Program Focuses on Technical Expertise

Our Worship and Music master’s isn’t just about learning music—though it’s a big part of it. We also teach you the technical aspects of being a worship leader. With courses like “advanced worship tech,” or “leading worship in a local church,” you’ll receive practical training that will make you stand out as a great leader with a ton of useful knowledge.Ěý

2. Our Worship and Music Master’s Is Rooted in Christ and His Word

What good is a Worship and Music program if not rooted in biblical truth? At Cairn, we recognize that the heart of worship is not merely about musical excellence or artistic expression; it is fundamentally about glorifying God and aligning our lives with His Word. Our commitment to Christ and His teachings serves as the guiding principle for all our programs, ensuring that every aspect of our curriculum reflects a deep understanding of Scripture.

When you enroll in our Worship and Music master’s program, you will engage in a comprehensive educational experience that integrates both practical skills and theological knowledge. Whether in a Music Composition course or an Overview of Christian Theology course, your spiritual growth is our top priority.

3. Our Music Department is Committed to Caring for You as an Individual, Not a Number

At the graduate level, particularly within fully online graduate programs, students frequently find themselves feeling isolated and disconnected from their educational experience. Students may feel like just a number in a large system.

At 91łÔąĎ, our commitment to fostering a supportive and nurturing environment sets us apart. Our School of Music faculty understand that the journey through graduate studies can be challenging. We prioritize maintaining strong, personal connections from the moment you enroll in our program. Our dedicated faculty members are not only experts in their fields but are also passionate about mentoring and guiding you throughout your academic journey.

4. Our Program Works with Your Busy Schedule

Our master’s in Worship and Music recognizes that, as you invest in yourself through an education, you also are someone with tons of other responsibilities to take care of. Cairn’s Worship and Music master’s is offered fully online, with a seven week course cycle. We’ve also taken it a step further. Just because it’s an online education doesn’t mean we cut corners; we haven’t compromised on a Christian education with integrity.Ěý

5. Our Program Facilitates Creativity, Culminating in a Final Project You Can Be Proud of

We want you to graduate from this program with a sense of accomplishment and tangible evidence of your hard work. By the end of your time in this worship and music master’s, you will have completed a self-produced six-track recording of three original songs and three arranged songs for congregational singing. This project represents all the learning and hard work you put into this program and serves as a great resume piece!

Even if you aren’t at the master’s stage of your education, that’s ok! Cairn also offers an undergraduate Worship and Music program and various other music or ministry degrees that might be a great fit for you!

Ready to take the next step? Apply to our Worship and Music master’s today!

One of my favorite parts about being a Worship & Music major at Cairn was how holistic and comprehensive my education was. Not only did I receive incredible technical training as a musician, my philosophy and theology as it pertains to the arts and worship was challenged and grown immensely. I also loved that this program equipped and encouraged me to use jazz, which is my â€heart music’ as my offering of worship.

Cairn Online Frequently Asked Questions

Our program is intentionally grounded in God’s Word. Courses are thoughtfully designed by Cairn faculty to promote deep learning and active engagement through instructor-led instruction, research-driven activities, active learning, and meaningful interactions with peers and faculty.ĚýAt Cairn, the students’ education and experience is designed to shapeĚýChristian character, cultivate wisdom, and prepare them to think, live, and serve biblically in an ever-changing world.

All courses, except the research courses, are structured in seven units and delivered in accelerated 7-week terms.

Each unit contains 5–7 modular activities, including:

    • Assigned readings and reading reflections
    • Instructional videos from Cairn faculty
    • Active learning activities
    • Weekly application projects
    • A component of the ongoing course research project

Faculty also schedule a few optional Zoom sessions throughout the term to connect with students and address questions.

Faculty are actively involved throughout the week—guiding learning activities, leading asynchronous discussions, grading work, and delivering personalized feedback. Online students also receive priority technical support and have access to valuable resources from the Masland Library and the Writing Lab.

The course transfer depends on where you are transferring from, and what program you are transferring to. If you are coming to Cairn Online from another institution, it is very likely you will have some credits that will transfer. Because there are so many options, we encourage you to talk to an enrollment counselor. If you are transferring out, Cairn is a regionally accreditedĚýschool and some credits should transfer with relative ease. Each college sets their own transfer criteria, so be sure to check their policies for specifics.

Why Music + MBA?

There has never been a more vibrant time for creating sustainable and profitable careers related to music and creativity. With this dual-level program, you can explore your passion for making music while building hard and soft skills to land a job after graduation and pursue a multitude of careers in and beyond the music industry. This degree fits students who know they want to study music but do not want to focus their study solely on composition or the performance of a particular instrument.

How it Works

This dual-level program allows you to condense what would be six years of study (four-year bachelor’s + two-year master’s) into just five years by starting master-level courses as early as your junior year. You’ll be able to complete all requirements for both degrees in as few as five years without taking summer courses.

You will also continue to receive your undergraduate scholarships and tuition aid for all five years of study, which will save you thousands of dollars.

Virginia Whitney

Virginia Whitney

Adjunct Professor, School of Music

A native of Trenton, NJ, Virginia graduated from the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music in 1978 with a BMus in theory and composition. While a student there, she studied with Vida Chenoweth, one of the early pioneers in developing a model for understanding the structure of unwritten non-Western music systems as a tool for helping minority peoples develop Christian hymnody.

From 1982-2001, she and her husband served with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Papua New Guinea as Bible translators with the Akoye people, being involved in the translation and literacy process, as well as encouraging ethnic hymnody with the Akoye and people of other language groups.

Since returning to the USA, she has been an active member of Lansdale Presbyterian Church (PCA) where she has served as music director and accompanist. She has recently become involved in ethnomusicology fieldwork again by researching the music of the Oroko people of Cameroon, with the goal of encouraging the Christians to use their local music styles in worship. Virginia has also worked with several other people groups in Cameroon, as well as some in The Gambia and Peru.
